Prologue

A German submarine was cruising in the darkness to recharge her batteries. First Officer Haas was standing in the conning tower watching through his binoculars; the hospital ship that sent a doctor aboard to operate on their captain was running parallel to their course.

He admired the doctor’s bravery and generosity. The doctor insisted they take on a supply of fresh citrus to ward off scurvy. He called it a Christmas present. The first officer chuckled to himself. “I wonder what the führer would say about that?”

His thoughts drifted back, thinking about Christmas with his family. When he was very young, his mother would go caroling with a group from the church; afterward, everyone gathered around a Christmas tree in the village square to join the caroling.

He ordered a course change and left the hospital ship in their wake, and hummed the last song he remembers from long ago, Silent Night.
